uncommon matters

Amélie Riech

uncommon matters fuses a delicate blend of femininity and old world quality craftsmanship, offering a range of fine porcelain accessories. The latest collection, AU [79] – the ordinal number of the element gold – is made up of structured cuffs, neckpieces, collars, and rings in a simple color palette of platinum, gold and pure white. Each piece is limited to 100 and handmade in the historical porcelain region of Thuringia, Germany.

The featured accessories are oversized and structured, while simultaneously organic and fragile. The rigid nature of the medium is offset by the jewelry’s intuitive form. Designer Amélie Riech works closely with the body; each piece is moulded around the female silhouette.

Porcelain is associated with delicacy, purity and nobility. uncommon matters explores the boundaries of product and concept. Riech reinvigorates and translates the graceful handcraft and heritage of the material into an unexpected context and explores the juxtaposition of its breakable yet enduring collectable nature.

Porcelain is a logical starting point for Riech’s designs as her love of the medium stems from childhood. However, uncommon matters’s scope extends beyond porcelain; further traditional handicrafts remain to be re-examined. Berlin born Amélie Riech was formally trained in Fashion Design. After graduation, she moved to Paris and worked with such designers as BLESS and Bernhard Willhelm, she also assisted a range of stylists, inclu- ding Katie Grand, Marie-Amélie Sauvé and Olivier Rizzo. She works as an editor and consultant for various magazines and fashion brands. In 2008, Riech founded uncommon matters, as a platform for her own designs and artistic work.

uncommon matters’s first collection handle with care was selected for the European Ceramics Westerwald Prize in 2009. Amélie Riech was nominated for the EPAA 2009 and collaborated with the Label Commuun in 2010. She has taken part in several exhibitions, including Galerie Oona (Berlin), Galerie Joyce (Paris), Ceramicmuseum Westerwald and the Anciens Abat- toirs (Mons).
